We have tried to make our website accessible to as many needs as we can, but you may need some additional software. Here are some ideas we’ve picked up along the way on how to make accessing our site easier. If you continue to struggle do get in touch with us on info@spokzpeople.org.uk and we will see if there is anything we can do. If not, we can offer a reduced fee depending on which areas of the site you can’t access.
Images
As far as we know, all images have alt tag descriptions. If you spot any we’ve missed do let us know.
Userway icon
There is a small symbol of a white man icon which on a laptop is at the top of the page or on a mobile device is at the side of the page. If you click on this you can select accessibility settings such as text size and spacing, hide images, Dyslexia friendly font, contrast and other options.
Text to speech
As a non profit we can’t afford to have the text-to-speech option through Userway, but there are many other ways to access our website using text to speech:
- Google Chrome has a text to speech reader
- VoiceOver on Mac or iOS
- On Apple devices, highlight the section to read and select Speak or use Speak shortcut on the keyboard. Ask Siri to “speak screen” on a page when using iPhone or iPad
- TalkBack on Android
- Windows Narrator
Emma, one of our members who is visually impaired, has written these blogs with some helpful information on accessibility features for Macbook and iPhone/iPad.
Charities for tech access
If you are having difficulty accessing the website due to difficulty using a computer or devices, there are some charities that help with access to technology:
- Special Effect is a charity primarily focussed on helping disabled people access gaming, but they will also help with access to computers and general technology.
- Remap custom make equipment and adaptations to help disabled people manage independently and may be able to help.
Other useful apps
In our live meetings, some members have mentioned they have found the following apps helpful when struggling to communicate verbally:
- Buzz cards on Google
- Speech Assistant on Google
- Prologue for Apple
- Grid for Apple
- Relay UK – This allows you to type instead of speak for calls
